DESCRIPTION
The Art by WASH project is a community project in Compton, Los Angeles, CA between Morphosis Architects and Fulton Leroy Washington (Mr. WASH). After being wrongfully incarcerated for 21 years, Mr. WASH was granted clemency by President Obama and was released in 2016. He learned the craft of painting while incarcerated and perfected his art of portraiture. Mr. WASH is now a celebrated artist, even being selected as one of 30 artists to participate in the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. biennial, where he was also the recipient of the Public Recognition Award. Now, Mr. WASH seeks to create and strengthen the artist community in South LA. This space will house artists-in-residence in individual studios and gallery spaces, provide resources to foster young artists and talents. Our vision is to grow individuals and strengthen the community through art through the new Compton Art Walk and ART BY WASH.
