DESCRIPTION
The Taino were the native inhabitants of the Caribbean. Though nearly wiped out after the arrival of the Europeans, their influence on today’s culture is still evident. With more and more Caribbeans claiming Taino ancestry and learning about the native culture of the Caribbean, the Taino Museum serves to celebrate and protect the artifacts of this culture. The Taino Museum, hosted on the grounds of the Cormier Beach Resort in Haiti, seeks to establish a permanent public museum committed to the exhibition and conservation of the Diquemare collection. The Diquemare collection consists of more than 4,500 indigenous, pre-Columbian, Taino artifacts.
An exhibition space, and protected area for archive storage, are the primary programmatic components of the museum. The design features a new 120 sqm exhibition pavilion as well as an alternation of an existing building, “the Annex,” of approximately 88 sqm. The Annex building will provide archive and storage support for the museum. The existing building will be retrofitted with a Taino-inspired pattern made of metal that serves as both weather protection and cultural indicator.
